Cours de guitare gratuits Dernière modification : 2013-02-15 En 1956, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins est un jeune espoir du rythm’n’blues qui a déjà sortit 3 disques au succès assez confidentiel. Quand il rentre dans un studio new-yorkais loué par le producteur Arnold Maxin de la Columbia, c’est pour enregistrer une ballade. Quelques bouteilles plus tard, c’est un morceau brute d’énergie qui deviendra un standard du rock, un morceau d’anthologie qui a connu de très nombreuses reprises. Entre-temps, le producteur, qui avait visiblement ressenti les paroles différemment, distribua aux musiciens et au chanteur quantités de boissons interdites à la vente aux mineurs et à consommer avec modération afin de les motiver ». Cela libéra aussi les cordes vocales d’Hawkins, vu la rage qu’il met dans chacune des paroles, qu’il ponctue de grognements, de bruits indistincts, de ricanements démoniaques et autres onomatopées. Saxophone qui se paye un solo dantesque, batterie très sèche et propre à se faire sampler, la rythmique est elle aussi devenue mythique elle sera omniprésente dans le film de Jim Jarmusch Stranger than paradise . Le double sens des paroles est lui aussi un des points forts de la chanson mais l’interprétation pleine de bruit et de fureur de Screamin lui donne un cachet unique, difficile à reproduire et qui vous prend aux tripes tout en vrillant les tympans. Le chant illustre l’amour fou, bestial, d’un homme prisonnier de ses sentiments et qui perd la raison. Il veut le contrôle sur cette femme alors qu’il perd le sien. Il finira logiquement par complètement partir en vrille. Le disque sort et remporte un franc succès mais il est très vite censuré par les radios on est alors aux débuts du rock avec Bill Haley et Elvis Presley, plus policés. C’est les différentes reprises faites quelques années plus tard par Nina Simone et surtout Creedance Clearwater Revival qui lui permettront de traverser les frontières et le temps avant de s’imposer comme une des plus grandes chansons de tous les temps. Plusieurs artistes en ont fait une version parmi lesquelles Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck avec Joss Stone, Katie Melua, Marilyn Manson, She & Him, Ray Charles, The Kills, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton avec BB King, Alan Price, Bonnie Tyler et j’en passe plus de 200 en tout.
